A new fence in Wolverhampton is usually one of two jobs. In Wednesfield, Bushbury and Fallings Park it is replacing tired chain-link or lap panels on an estate plot. In Tettenhall, Penn and Compton it is a longer boundary on a big garden, often running up to an old sandstone or brick front wall. The second kind is where the city's rules bite: thirteen conservation areas carry Article 4 directions, and a fence next to a drive has to leave the driver a clear view of the pavement.
Ground and Gate doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local fencing specialist who covers WV1 to WV11, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What a new fence costs in Wolverhampton
Rates are per metre, supply and fit, waste included, indicative for the West Midlands.
| Style | Under 1m | About 1.2m | About 1.8m |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overlap panels | £36–£54 | £48–£72 | £60–£90 |
| Featheredge / closeboard | £57–£81 | £76–£108 | £95–£135 |
| Slatted / contemporary | £78–£114 | £104–£152 | £130–£190 |
| Post and rail | £24–£39 | £32–£52 | £40–£65 |
| Extra | Per metre |
|---|---|
| Concrete posts instead of timber | about £10 |
| Removing and taking away the old fence | £8–£15 |
Swapping 20 metres of chain-link on an estate plot for 1.8m lap panels on concrete posts comes to roughly £1,560–£2,300 with the old fence taken away. A 30 metre featheredge boundary on a Tettenhall garden is about £3,390–£4,800 on the same terms. The fence cost per metre guide shows how the figures add up.
What pushes the price up here
- Length. West-side plots are long. Longer runs cost less per metre, but the total climbs fast.
- Sandstone in the west. The Tettenhall Ridge sits on sandstone and conglomerate bedrock, partly under glacial till. Where post holes meet rock, the crew may need to core or break out rather than dig.
- Old fence and footings. Removal adds £8–£15 per metre, and old concrete post bases slow the dig.
- Height near a road. Over 1m beside a road or its pavement, or over 2m anywhere, means a site visit and usually planning permission.
- Access. Terraces in Whitmore Reans and Blakenhall often mean carrying everything through the house, which adds 15–20%.
Article 4 houses and front boundaries
Wolverhampton has 31 conservation areas, and the council's own list marks 13 of them as having Article 4 directions. Several are residential: Tettenhall Greens, Tettenhall Wood, Tettenhall Road, Penn Fields, St Philips (Penn Fields), Park, Castlecroft Gardens, Copthorne Road, The Oaks (Merridale Road), Vicarage Road (Penn) and Fellows Street (Blakenhall).
The appraisals for Tettenhall Road, Park, Penn Fields and Castlecroft Gardens describe how their directions work. They apply to named houses, not whole streets, and they bring the demolition of a gate, fence or wall that fronts the highway under planning control. In Park, Penn Fields and Castlecroft Gardens that also covers boundaries fronting a waterway or open space. The Tettenhall Road direction, confirmed in August 2011, lists houses on Tettenhall Road, Newbridge Avenue, Newbridge Crescent, Balfour Crescent and a few nearby streets. If your house is on one of these lists, taking out an old front wall to put up a fence needs permission first.
Vicarage Road in Penn goes further in spirit. The council's 2022 appraisal says new railings, gates, fences and high walls are not considered appropriate there, because the area's character depends on low walls, hedges and open fronts. The Wolverhampton fencing page covers the sandstone walls.
Corner plots and fences beside a drive
The city's dropped-kerb pack, updated in October 2026, asks for a pedestrian visibility splay of at least 2m by 2m at a new crossing, measured from the back of the footway, with nothing in it over 1m high. It lists "the view when driving out of your property is obstructed by high walls or fencing" as a reason to refuse. Near a junction the council can ask for a road safety audit, which may recommend taking down boundary walls or cutting back hedges.
So if you might want a drive later, keep the 2m of fence nearest the opening at 1m or below. On a corner plot, the national 1m limit applies along both roads. See the 1m rule next to a road.
Council land and the pavement
The council lists "encroachment of highway boundaries" among obstructions it can act on, alongside hedges overhanging the pavement. If an old fence has drifted onto a verge, the new one goes back on your boundary, not the old line. Check with our guide to who owns the fence. Materials stacked on the pavement during the job need a section 171 licence, which the council lists at £52.50.
Getting rid of the old fence
Wolverhampton has two tips, at Anchor Lane in Lanesfield, Bilston (WV14 9NE) and Shaw Road (WV10 9LE). Both open 8am to 4pm every day and take timber. Cars need no booking. Vans, larger vehicles and trailers need a booking and a permit, and you need photo ID with your address or photo ID plus proof of address. Trade waste is refused, so a fencing firm's disposal is priced into its quote.
What the job involves
- Checks. The line, ownership, any Article 4 listing and the view from any drive.
- Clearing. The old fence and footings come out.
- Posts. Concrete or timber posts are set, cored into rock where needed.
- Finishing. Panels or boards, gravel boards and capping go on, and the waste leaves.

Questions about new fences in Wolverhampton
Is my house in Tettenhall covered by an Article 4 direction on front boundaries?
Only if it is on the direction's list. The Tettenhall Road direction names specific houses on Tettenhall Road, Newbridge Avenue, Newbridge Crescent, Balfour Crescent and nearby streets. Check the council's conservation page and appraisal, or call its Historic Environment Service.
Can I fence the front of my house on Vicarage Road in Penn?
Expect resistance. The council's 2022 appraisal says new fences, railings, gates and high walls are not appropriate in the Vicarage Road conservation area. Speak to the planning team before ordering anything.
How high can a fence be beside my drive in Wolverhampton?
For a new dropped kerb, the city wants a pedestrian visibility splay of at least 2m by 2m with nothing over 1m in it. Keep the fence low near the opening and step up to full height beyond it.
Can I take my old fence to the Shaw Road tip in Wolverhampton?
Yes, timber is accepted, and a car needs no booking. A van or trailer needs a booking and a permit, and trade waste is refused.
