Most driveway gates in Wolverhampton go on the west side of the city: villas and interwar houses in Tettenhall, Compton, Penn and Castlecroft with long fronts and stone or brick piers already in place. The city's highway rules are unusually specific about what can stand beside a drive opening. It publishes a minimum opening width, a visibility splay with a 1m height cap, and a set distance from junctions. Gates have to fit inside all three.

Ground and Gate doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local gate specialist who covers WV1 to WV11, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.

What driveway gates cost in Wolverhampton

Prices are supply and fit for manual gates, including posts, hinges and a drop bolt, waste taken away. They are indicative for the West Midlands.

GateTimberMetal
Single driveway gate£500–£900£800–£1,500
Pair of driveway gates£900–£1,800£1,500–£3,500

The city asks for an opening of at least 2.7m for a drive-in access, so most gates here are pairs of about 1.35m to 1.8m a leaf. Hanging between existing sandstone or brick piers saves new footings, but old piers often need checking or rebuilding to take the weight. Automated gates go to a free survey. The driveway gates cost guide has worked examples.

What pushes the price up here

  • Old piers. Sandstone and old brick piers on older Tettenhall and Penn houses may not take heavy metal gates without rebuilding. See garden walls.
  • Wide openings. An opening over 3m needs heavier frames and hinges.
  • Slopes. The council's appraisal describes Wightwick Bank and Tinacre Hill as steep roads on the ridge. A drive that rises from the road may need rising hinges or a pair.
  • Automation. Cabling, motors and safety devices are priced on survey.
  • Planning. Article 4 houses and conservation areas can need an application and traditional materials.

The city's opening and splay rules

Wolverhampton's dropped-kerb pack, revised in October 2026, sets two layouts:

  • Drive straight in. A frontage at least 5.5m deep, with an opening at least 2.7m wide at the back of the footway.
  • Park alongside the pavement. A frontage at least 2.5m deep, with an opening in the wall or hedge at least 6m wide.

Gates that open inwards swing into those spaces. On a 5.5m frontage, a single 2.7m gate and a parked car will clash. A pair of shorter leaves, or a sliding gate with a clear run along the boundary, keeps the full depth for the car.

The pack also asks for a pedestrian visibility splay of at least 2m by 2m from the back of the footway, with nothing in it higher than 1m. It lists a view obstructed by high walls or fencing as a reason to refuse. That points to setting tall gates back from the pavement edge, or keeping the walls and piers beside the opening low, so you can see people on the pavement as you pull out.

Near junctions the bar is higher. A crossing closer than 10m to a junction, or 15m on a major road, can trigger a road safety audit costing £100. The audit may recommend removing boundary walls or cutting back hedges, and if it says no, the decision is final.

Opening and height next to the road

Gates should open onto your own land. Under section 153 of the Highways Act 1980, where a gate across an entrance opens outwards onto a street, the highway authority can serve notice requiring it to be altered. Wolverhampton's obstructions page also lists encroachment onto the highway among the things it can act against.

Gates next to a road used by vehicles can be up to 1m without planning permission. Taller gates need an application. See the 1m rule next to a road.

Article 4 houses and conservation areas

A new crossing in any of the city's 31 conservation areas, or at a listed house, needs planning permission first. Thirteen areas carry Article 4 directions. The appraisals for Tettenhall Road, Park, Penn Fields and Castlecroft Gardens say their directions bring the demolition of a gate, fence or wall fronting the highway under planning control for named houses. Taking out an old gate and pier to widen an opening for new gates is exactly that kind of work.

On Vicarage Road in Penn, the council's 2022 appraisal says new gates, railings, fences and high walls are not considered appropriate. Expect a hard conversation there about any new driveway gates. The Wolverhampton fencing page covers the stone walls.

Automated gates

Electric gates are machinery. The Health and Safety Executive's safety alert on powered gates followed the death of a child trapped in a gap between a gate and its brick pillar, a gap that closed as the gates opened. Installers should work to BS EN 12453, fit safety edges or photocells, test closing forces and give you a declaration of conformity. Ask how the hinge-side gap will be closed off on older piers.

What the job involves

  1. Measuring. Opening width, frontage depth, the splay and the slope.
  2. Posts or piers. New steel posts, or existing piers checked and strengthened.
  3. Hanging. Gates hung to open inwards, with stops and a drop bolt.
  4. Automation, if wanted. Motors, safety edges and photocells fitted and force-tested.

Questions about driveway gates in Wolverhampton

How wide must the gate opening be for a Wolverhampton dropped kerb?

At least 2.7m at the back of the footway for a drive-in layout with a 5.5m deep frontage. For parking parallel to the pavement on a shallow frontage, the opening must be at least 6m.

Can I have tall gates right at the pavement edge in Wolverhampton?

It can count against a new crossing. The city wants a 2m by 2m pedestrian splay with nothing over 1m high, so tall gates are better set back with low walls either side.

Do I need permission to remove the old gate on an Article 4 house in Penn Fields?

If the house is named in the Penn Fields direction, yes. The direction brings demolition of a gate, fence or wall fronting a highway, waterway or open space under planning control. Check the list in the council's appraisal.

My house is near a junction in Wolverhampton. Can I still get gates and a crossing?

Possibly. Within 10m of a junction the council can ask for a £100 road safety audit. It may suggest lowering walls or cutting back hedges, but if it advises against a crossing, that is final.
