Driveway gates in the DY postcodes tend to go on two kinds of house. One is the Stourbridge, Oldswinford or Pedmore villa with brick piers already at the front, where an old pair of gates has rotted or gone missing. The other is the Kingswinford or Wordsley semi where the owner wants to close off a drive for children or a dog.
Either way, the gates sit on the line between your land and the pavement, and Dudley Council is the highway authority for almost the whole patch. That brings a few local rules on depth, swing and what goes on the footway while the gates are fitted.
Ground and Gate doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local gate specialist who covers DY1 to DY9, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What driveway gates cost in Dudley & Stourbridge
Prices are supply and fit for manual gates, including posts, hinges and a drop bolt, waste taken away. They are indicative for the West Midlands.
| Gate | Timber | Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Single driveway gate | £500–£900 | £800–£1,500 |
| Pair of driveway gates | £900–£1,800 | £1,500–£3,500 |
The rates are the same across the West Midlands. What moves a DY job up or down is the opening. A single timber gate across a 3m semi drive in Wall Heath sits at the bottom of the table. A pair of metal gates hung between old villa piers in Oldswinford sits near the top, and more if the piers need rebuilding first. Electric gates are always priced after a free site visit. The driveway gates cost guide has worked examples.
What pushes the price up here
- Old piers. Many Victorian brick piers were never built to carry a heavy pair of gates. If they lean or the caps are loose, they need rebuilding before anything is hung.
- Slopes. A drive that climbs from the road needs rising hinges or a pair rather than a single leaf, so the gates clear the ground as they open inward.
- Delivery. Dudley does not allow building materials on the highway, so made-to-measure metal gates go straight from the van to the drive.
- Planning first. In the Article 4 areas the gates wait for permission, and the council will want detail that matches the street.
- Automation. Power, safety edges and photocells are priced on survey.
How deep your drive needs to be for gates
Gates and parking compete for the same space. Dudley's dropped kerb guidance says a parked car must not overhang the footway, and that a hardstanding should normally be at least 4.8 metres deep and 2.4 metres wide, set at 90 degrees to the road. Parking parallel to the road is not accepted, and the council expects a car to get on and off the drive in one manoeuvre.
A crossing can sometimes be agreed where the frontage is shorter, but only down to an absolute minimum of 3.8 metres, and only if you sign a legal agreement limiting the size of vehicle parked there. That agreement is noted in the local land charges register, so it binds whoever owns the house next.
Gates that open inwards take some of that depth. If your drive is close to the minimum, a pair of short leaves or a sliding gate keeps the parking space clear. The specialist will measure this at the visit. See how to get a dropped kerb and the Dudley and Stourbridge area page for the council's fees.
Gates must open inwards
Under section 153 of the Highways Act 1980, a gate that opens onto a street must not open outwards, and the highway authority can serve notice requiring it to be altered. Dudley's highways page adds that wilfully obstructing a highway is an offence, with a maximum fine of £1,000 in the magistrates' court. On a narrow Lye or Netherton footway, an outward-swinging gate would block the pavement every time it opened. Height matters too: next to a road, gates over 1 metre need planning permission under the national rules. See the 1m rule next to a road.
Conservation areas and Article 4 streets
In any of Dudley's conservation areas you need permission to take down a gate, wall or fence. In Love Lane, Oldswinford and Mushroom Green, both in this patch, an Article 4 direction goes further: planning permission is needed to build, alter or remove gates, fences, walls or any boundary feature.
The council's character study for Love Lane shows why. It describes red brick front walls with terracotta-capped pillars on one side of Corser Street, broken only by pedestrian gateways, and notes where openings have been cut for cars. New gates there are judged on how well they match that detail, so expect to show drawings of the piers, caps and gate design.
If you rent from Dudley Council, its dropped kerb page says tenants need the Estates Office's permission to build a hard standing, and may need it to alter boundary walls or cross council land. Ask before you order gates.
Electric gates
The Health and Safety Executive describes powered gates as machines that must be properly designed, installed and maintained to avoid serious, even fatal, injuries. Health and safety law does not apply to private householders, but HSE notes that householders may still be liable for harm their gates cause. That is why every automated gate here gets a site visit before a price.
What the job involves
- Measure and check. Opening width, drive depth, slope, pier condition and any conservation or Article 4 controls.
- Posts or piers. Steel or timber posts set in concrete, or existing piers repaired or rebuilt.
- Hanging. Gates hung to open inwards, with drop bolts, stops and a latch.
- Automation, if chosen. Motors, safety devices and a handover pack after a separate survey.
Questions about driveway gates in Dudley & Stourbridge
How deep does my Dudley drive need to be if I want gates?
Dudley normally wants a parking space at least 4.8 metres deep and 2.4 metres wide, so a car does not overhang the footway. Inward-opening gates use some of that depth, so measure from the gate line, not the back of the pavement. A shorter frontage, down to 3.8 metres, needs a legal agreement on vehicle size.
Can I hang new gates on the piers of my Love Lane house in Oldswinford?
Only with planning permission. Love Lane has an Article 4 direction covering gates, fences and walls, and the council's character study puts weight on the original walls, pillars and copings. Speak to Dudley's Historic Environment Team before you order.
Will Dudley make me change gates that swing out over the pavement?
It can. Section 153 of the Highways Act 1980 says gates opening onto a street must not open outwards, and the highway authority can serve notice to have them altered. Dudley also treats wilful obstruction of the highway as an offence.
I rent my house from Dudley Council. Can I put up driveway gates?
Ask the Estates Office first. Dudley's dropped kerb guidance says council tenants need permission to build a hard standing, and may also need it to alter boundary walls or cross council land.
Who is responsible if electric gates at my Stourbridge home hurt someone?
HSE says health and safety law does not cover private householders' powered gates, but owners may still be liable for harm they cause. A competent installer, a risk assessment and regular servicing are the protection.
