Edgbaston is where the West Midlands' grander driveway gates hang: metal pairs between brick piers at the front of villa drives, often on the Calthorpe Estate. That means estate consent, and sometimes planning permission too. In Harborne, the Moor Pool and Greenfield Road Article 4 areas bring front gates under planning control. On the Sandwell side, in Oldbury, Langley and Warley, most gates close off a semi's side drive, and the question is whether there is room for the car behind them.
Ground and Gate doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local gate specialist who covers B15, B16, B17, B32, B66, B67 and B68, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.
What driveway gates cost in Edgbaston and Harborne
Prices are supply and fit for manual gates, including posts, hinges and a drop bolt, waste taken away. They are indicative for the West Midlands.
| Gate | Timber | Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Single driveway gate | £500–£900 | £800–£1,500 |
| Pair of driveway gates | £900–£1,800 | £1,500–£3,500 |
In Edgbaston, wide openings and made-to-measure metalwork push most jobs towards the top of the metal range, and openings over 3 metres, new piers or automation go to a site visit. A plain steel pair for an Oldbury or Langley side drive usually sits lower. The Calthorpe Estate asks for gates painted in one colour without overly decorative features, which rules out the most ornate designs. The driveway gates cost guide has worked examples, and new brick piers are covered under garden walls.
What pushes the price up here
- Wide villa openings. In-and-out drives can mean two pairs of gates, each over 3 metres, with heavy hinges and deep footings.
- Setting gates back. On the Calthorpe Estate, gates generally have to sit far enough back for a car to pull off the road while they are shut. That can mean new posts or piers further up the drive.
- Shallow forecourts. Sandwell won't consider a dropped kerb unless the forecourt is at least 4.2 metres deep from the back of the footpath, and Birmingham asks for 4.75 metres. An inward-opening gate takes space from that, so a narrow pair or a sliding gate may be needed.
- Automation. Power runs on long drives, safety devices and testing are all priced after a survey.
Calthorpe Estate gates
The Calthorpe Estate's Residents' Handbook lists railings and gates among the most common works that need consent under the Scheme of Management. That applies to freeholders as well as leaseholders. The estate says it is likely to grant consent in most cases if the proposal meets these criteria:
- Railings and gates painted in one colour, preferably black, without overly decorative features.
- Landscaping included in the plans to soften the new gates.
- The house is not part of a development or row designed on open-plan lines.
- Gates set back so that a vehicle entering while they are closed or locked does not obstruct traffic on the highway.
- Planning permission or listed building consent obtained as well, where the house is listed or in a conservation area.
Neighbours get 14 days to comment, and the estate decides at a monthly review meeting. Estate consent is not planning permission, so a gate over 1 metre next to a road may need both. The handbook advises applying to the council at the same time as the estate.
Moor Pool, Greenfield Road and Edgbaston Article 4 areas
Moor Pool. The Article 4(2) Direction covers every house on the estate, and it includes putting up or altering a gate, wall or fence that fronts a road or open space. The council's management plan also says permission for new driveways is not likely to be given, so a new vehicle gate where there is no drive now is unlikely. Most roads on the estate are only 5.5 metres wide.
Greenfield Road. The 2009 Article 4 Direction covers putting up, altering or demolishing a gate facing a road, waterway or open space, on the houses it lists along Greenfield Road, St Mary's Road, Vivian Road, South Street, Bull Street, York Street and nearby.
Edgbaston. Birmingham lists the Edgbaston conservation area's Article 4 Direction as covering only part of it. The council's published reports include one for 65–72 Wheeleys Lane, which brought gates, fences and walls fronting the road under control. Elsewhere in the conservation area, a gate over 1 metre next to a road still needs planning permission under the national rules.
Opening inwards and powered gates
Section 153 of the Highways Act 1980 stops gates opening outwards over a road or pavement. Birmingham's Dropped Crossings Policy repeats this: any gate at a vehicle entrance must open inwards, and the council will take enforcement action if it doesn't. On a Bearwood or Smethwick forecourt close to the 4.2 metre minimum, that usually rules out a single wide leaf. For the dropped kerb process on each side of the boundary, see the Edgbaston and Harborne fencing and gates page.
For electric gates, the Health and Safety Executive says powered gates are machines that must meet the legal safety standards even at a private house, come with user instructions and a declaration of conformity, and be installed and checked by competent contractors. Householders aren't covered by health and safety law for private gates, but may still be liable for harm the gates cause.
What the job involves
- Consents. The specialist checks for Calthorpe, Moor Pool, Greenfield Road or planning issues, and measures the set-back and forecourt depth.
- Posts or piers. Steel posts or brick piers go in on deep footings, set back where needed.
- Hanging. Gates are hung to open inwards, trued up and fitted with drop bolts, stops and a latch.
- Automation, if wanted. Motors, photocells or safety edges, and controls are fitted, tested and documented.
Questions about driveway gates in Edgbaston & Harborne
How far back must gates be set on the Calthorpe Estate?
The handbook doesn't give a figure. It says gates will generally only be allowed if they are set back so a car entering while they are closed or locked doesn't obstruct traffic on the road. In practice that means room for a whole car between the pavement and the gate.
What colour should new railings and gates be on the Calthorpe Estate?
One colour, preferably black, with no overly decorative features. The estate also wants landscaping in the plans to soften the gates, and it won't usually allow them on houses in a row designed as open-plan.
Can I add vehicle gates to a house on the Moor Pool estate?
It is unlikely. Gates and walls fronting the road need planning permission under the estate's Article 4 Direction, and the council's management plan says permission for new driveways is not likely to be given. Replacing an existing gate like for like is the more realistic job.
Will Sandwell approve a dropped kerb if my Oldbury forecourt has gates?
Only if the forecourt is at least 4.2 metres deep and 2.75 metres wide, measured from the back of the footpath to the building line. Gates must open inwards, so check that the car still fits behind them when they are shut.
