Driveway gates in Walsall usually go on the bigger fronts: interwar semis and detached houses in Streetly, Aldridge and Park Hall, and the larger plots around Pelsall and Brownhills. On a shorter front the gates have to share space with the car, and Walsall's minimum drive size decides whether they fit at all. A few streets also sit under Article 4 directions that bring gates under planning control.

Ground and Gate doesn't do the work. We pass your enquiry to one local gate specialist who covers WS1 to WS9, and they confirm a fixed price with you directly.

What driveway gates cost in Walsall

Prices are supply and fit for manual gates, including posts, hinges and a drop bolt, waste taken away. They are indicative for the West Midlands.

GateTimberMetal
Single driveway gate£500–£900£800–£1,500
Pair of driveway gates£900–£1,800£1,500–£3,500

Walsall's drives must be at least 2.8m wide for a new dropped kerb, so most openings here are 2.8m to 3.6m. That is pair territory, with each leaf about 1.4m to 1.8m. Electric gates are always priced after a free survey. The driveway gates cost guide has worked examples, including gates with matching fencing.

What pushes the price up here

  • New piers. Many Walsall fronts have a low wall but nothing strong enough to hang a heavy gate. New brick piers with proper footings are a separate job; see garden walls.
  • Width. Openings over 3m need heavier frames, posts and hinges.
  • Slope. A drive rising from the road may need rising hinges or a pair rather than a single gate.
  • Automation. Power supply, safety equipment and stronger posts are priced on survey.
  • Conservation areas. Matching traditional materials, and the time a planning application takes, add cost in the areas below.

Gates and Walsall's driveway rules

Walsall's guide to dropped crossings sets a minimum hardstanding of 4.8m long, measured from the front of the house to the property boundary, and 2.8m wide. The council says that is the smallest space in which a car can park without hanging over the highway, which it notes is an offence.

Gates change that sum. Hung at the boundary and opening inwards, as they should, each leaf swings into the drive. On a 4.8m drive, a single 2.8m gate cannot open with a car parked behind it. A pair of 1.4m leaves needs much less room, and a sliding gate needs none, as long as there is a clear run along the boundary. Measure from the house to where the gates will hang, not to the back of the pavement.

A standard Walsall crossing is three dropped kerbs and two tapers, 4.5m in all, and the largest it will normally build is 6.3m. The council can also refuse a crossing at a junction, on a sharp bend, or close to traffic signals or pedestrian crossings. Get the kerb approved before you order gates sized to it. The Walsall driveways page covers the fees.

Opening and height next to the road

Gates must not open outwards across the pavement. Under section 153 of the Highways Act 1980, where a gate across an entrance opens onto a street, the highway authority can serve notice requiring it to be altered so it no longer does. In Walsall that authority is the council.

Height is a planning question. Gates next to a road used by vehicles, or its pavement, can be up to 1m without planning permission. Anything taller needs an application. See the 1m rule next to a road.

Article 4 and conservation areas

Walsall has 18 conservation areas, and in all of them a new dropped kerb needs planning permission first. Two have Article 4 directions that reach gates directly:

  • Highgate. The 1991 direction covers part of the conservation area. It removes permitted development rights for putting up, altering or demolishing gates, fences and walls to the front or sides of a house, and for forming a new access onto an unclassified road.
  • Great Barr. The 1991 direction covers any gate, fence, wall or other enclosure, wherever it sits, and new accesses too.

Inside either area, even a low gate needs planning permission. Ask the conservation officer early, and expect to be asked for materials that suit the house.

Automated gates

Electric gates are machinery. The Health and Safety Executive issued a safety alert after a child was killed by a powered gate. The gate leaves left a gap against corbelled brick piers that closed as the gates opened. If your gates will hang on brick piers, ask the installer to check that gap at the hinge side in every position. Installers should work to BS EN 12453, fit safety edges or photocells, test the closing force and hand over a declaration of conformity.

What the job involves

  1. Measuring. The specialist checks the opening, the drive depth behind it and the slope.
  2. Posts or piers. Steel posts or piers go in on concrete footings sized for the gate weight.
  3. Hanging. Gates are hung to open inwards, with stops and a drop bolt.
  4. Automation, if wanted. Ducting, motors and safety devices are fitted and tested.

Questions about driveway gates in Walsall

How deep does my Walsall drive need to be if I add gates?

Walsall's minimum for a new crossing is 4.8m from the front of the house to the boundary. Gates opening inwards eat into that, so allow for the swing of each leaf as well as the car. A pair or a sliding gate keeps more of the drive usable.

Do new gates in the Highgate conservation area in Walsall need planning permission?

In the part covered by the 1991 Article 4 direction, yes, whatever their height. The direction covers gates, fences and walls to the front or sides of a house. Check the plan on the council's Article 4 page.

Will Walsall widen my dropped kerb to suit wider gates?

Up to a point. A standard crossing is 4.5m including the tapers, and the council will not normally go beyond 6.3m. Ask on the application if you need more, and say why.

Can driveway gates on a Walsall street open out over the pavement?

No. Gates should open inwards onto your own land. Under section 153 of the Highways Act 1980 the council can serve notice requiring a gate that opens onto the street to be altered.
